Swanepoel wines from the Oude Compagnies Post winery in South Africa
Experience the idyllic Oude Compagnies Post, a winery at the foot of the majestic Obiqua Mountains in the Tulbagh Valley, South Africa. The vineyards not only offer breathtaking views of mountains and valleys, but also a perfect backdrop for the old stone cellar and the charming country cottages.
History of the winery
Oude Compagnies Post is proud to be owned by the Swanepoel family, who sell their fine wines under the brands "Compagnies Wijn" and "Swanepoel". Since 2018, the winery has been under the management of Dirk Swanepoel, the youngest son of the family, who has perfected his winemaking craft in, among other places, the renowned Sonoma County in California. At this wine farm you can not only enjoy the latest vintages straight from the barrel, but also take a hike through the Yellowwood Forest to experience the beauty of the Tulbagh Valley.
Viticulture and terroir
Oude Compagniees Post has very different soil types and structures. This allows us to be very specific about the style of wine we want to produce. The red grape varieties are planted on very thick clay and stone soil with less productive vines, are very concentrated in taste and have good structure and complexity. The high proportion of rock in the soil ensures good water infiltration and maintenance of a good soil temperature. The clay helps retain water and valuable minerals in the soil.
Oude Compagnies Post sits high on the rocky mountain slopes of the Tulbagh Valley and faces southeast. The early morning sun and cool afternoon breeze from the mountains ensure that the grapes remain healthy and reach optimal phenolic ripeness.
The farm is surrounded by native fynbos that grow alongside the vineyards. In some cases we have left native vegetation between the rows to grow in symbiosis with the grapes. The aromatic and complex flavors of the fynbos contribute to the final complexity and quality of the wine. The small streams and mountain streams around the vineyards ensure good drainage of the soil in winter and also have a cooling effect on the vines in summer.
