Lemberg: wines with character from South Africa
Tulbagh, a smaller wine region of South Africa, is known for its landscape and fertile soils. Here lies the boutique wine farm Lemberg Wine Estate - surrounded by views of the Witzenberg and Winterhoek mountains - 120 km northeast of Cape Town and 5 km south of the historic town of Tulbagh.
History of the winery
Founded in 1978 by legendary winemaker Janey Muller, Lemberg became known for its Sauvignon Blanc and Hárslevelü. The family came from what was then Lemberg in Poland, now Lviv in Ukraine after the border change, where her husband was born. Since selling in 2007, the boutique property has continued to evolve in both the vineyard and the cellar. The Lemberg team, driven by the duo Henk du Bruyn and Suzette Jansen van Rensburg, continues to pursue the philosophy of ensuring Lemberg's success with perfection, patience and passion.
Viticulture and terroir
The vineyard, equipped with trellises and irrigation systems, requires skilled hands to carefully care for each vine. The focus of the winery is on the manual production of wines and the manual management of various growth phases, from caring for the vines to the manual harvesting of grapes during the grape harvest. Sustainable practices such as cover crops, mulching and hand weeding minimize the use of herbicides. Every year the winery successfully monitors chemical and wastewater management through the “Integrated Wine Production” audit.
While red grape varieties dominate the collection, the Lemberg winery cultivates white varieties, namely Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Hárslevelü, thus expanding its range to include an interesting selection. The white wines are made in the oxidative style, undergoing natural fermentation and aging in antique barrels. The Lemberg Wine Estate owns the only mother block of Hárslevelü in South Africa, a privilege they value and which comes from the Tokaj wine region in Hungary.
