Blue Crane: a jewel with exclusive wines from South Africa
Located in the beautiful and popular Tulbagh region, Blue Crane Vineyards is a hidden gem. It is a wonderful place with breathtaking views of the Witzenberg, Winterhoek and Saronsberg mountains. The property was named after the national bird after two birds were spotted nesting near the vineyards.
History of the winery
The farm is not open to the public and was taken over about 15 years ago by businessman Fred Crabbia from Johannesburg and built in its current form. A large part of this is played by the couple Zia Fox, the farm's winemaker, and her husband Chris Fox, the farm manager, who have been there since the takeover. In 2012, the first olives were pressed on the Fram, which received the prestigious “Extra Virgin Olive Oil” status.
Viticulture and terroir
Blue Crane Vineyards has taken advantage of the country's unique diversity and created a small selection of outstanding terroir-driven wines whose hallmark is exceptional smoothness. Zia Fox, the farm's winemaker, runs the farm alongside her husband Chris, the farm manager, and has distinguished herself by producing award-winning wines from their own vineyards. Native trees have been planted on the farm and major measures have been implemented to preserve the biodiversity of the farm and improve the natural ecology of the area. The farm is proud of the excellent potential of the terroir and the unique flair of the wines.
